A group of American prospective parents have filed a complaint at the European Court of Human Rights over Russia's new law banning adoptions of Russian children by U.S. citizens.
The group's lawyer, Karinna Moskalenko, told Ekho Moskvy radio on January 23 the complaint was filed by Americans who were not able to get Russian court approval for adoptions before the new law went into effect on January 1, 2013.
She questioned the quality and legitimacy of the law.
The legislation was seen as a reaction to a U.S. law known as the Magnitsky Act.
That law puts sanctions on Russian officials linked to the death of whistle-blowing lawyer Sergei Magnitsky in a Moscow prison in 2009 and other alleged human rights abuses.
