The U.S. Department of Justice said on May 1 that a Ukrainian national was sentenced to 13 years and seven months in prison for over 2,500 ransomware attacks where he demanded more than $700 million in ransom payments. Yaroslav Vasynskiy, 24, was ordered to pay over $16 million in restitution. Vasynskiy used the Sodinokibi/REvil ransomware variant, and publicly exposed victims' data when they would not pay ransom demands. Vasynskiy pleaded guilty to an 11-count indictment charging him with conspiracy to commit fraud and related activity in connection with computers, damage to protected computers, and conspiracy to commit money laundering.
