Heorhiy Gongadze was not a martyr in the service of freedom of speech, as some would have him. He was a Ukrainian journalist -- mature, experienced, hardened, and, at the same time, somewhat romantic. He was, however, very serious about his work.
No matter who is ultimately elected Ukrainian president in the February 7 runoff, the winner cannot become president of all Ukrainians. Considerable efforts will be required to win the acceptance of even a majority of the country's citizens.
