Russian 'Forbes' Editor Gunned Down

10 July 2004 -- Gunmen have killed the editor of the Russian edition of the business magazine "Forbes."

Police say U.S.-born Pavel Klebnikov was shot four times outside the magazine's offices in Moscow last night.

"Forbes" publisher Steve Forbes praised Klebnikov as a "courageous, dedicated, and ever-curious" reporter. Klebnikov's family urged U.S. and international authorities to help find and convict those responsible for the slaying.

"Forbes" started its Russian-language edition in April. A month later the magazine created a furor after publishing a list of Russia's 100 wealthiest people.

The Interfax news agency quoted Leonid Bershidskii, the publisher of Russian "Forbes," as saying that Klebnikov recently "had not dug up anything sensitive."
