KYIV, Sept. 21 (NCA) -- Moldovan President Vladimir
Voronin arrived in Kyiv today for talks with President Viktor
Yushchenko on Ukraine's efforts to settle the conflict over the
breakaway Transdniester region.
Yushchenko proposed a seven-point peace plan in May that
envisions granting broad autonomy to Transdniester but keeping
it within Moldova's borders.
Yushchenko's plan calls for holding internationally
monitored elections to the Transdniester parliament and
transforming Russia's 1,500-strong peacekeeping operation there
into an international observer mission.
Transdniester declared independence in 1990, leading to
an armed conflict two years later that killed more than 1,500
people. The mostly Slavic, Russian-speaking region is not
recognized internationally. Many ethnic Ukrainians live there.
