Russia Dumps Bolshevik Holiday

(RFE/RL) 1 November 2005 -- Russia will mark a new state holiday, the Day of People's Unity, on 4 November.

Ivan Shklovets, head of the legal department at the Federal Labor and
Employment Service, said there will be three days off this year, from
4-6 November, for people who work five days a week, because the weekend
falls on 5-6 November.

7 November, which marks the 1917 Bolshevik Revolution and used to be a
state holiday, will be a regular working day this year, the same as 12
December -- the former Constitution Day.

The new holiday commemorates the events of 4 November 1612, when Russian volunteers freed Moscow from Polish armies.
