Police Injured In Latest Daghestan Violence


(RFE/RL) 12 December 2005 -- A police officer was shot and wounded and two others were injured in violence in Russia's North Caucasus republic of Daghestan.


Regional Interior Ministry authorities say one police official was shot yesterday by an assailant in the village of Novomekhelta.


In a separate incident the same day, two police officers suffered injuries after being attacked by a group of five men whom the ministry identified as Chechens.


Officials say more than 40 law enforcement officers have been killed in Daghestan in 2005.


Also yesterday, the bodies of a school principal and his wife were found near Ashagastal-Kazmalyar in southern Daghestan. The couple's two sons, aged 26 and 30, were later found dead of knife and gunshot wounds.
