Unfinished Politkovskaya Article Published

The front page of "Novaya Gazata" the day after Anna Politkovskaya was killed (epa) MOSCOW, October 12, 2006 (RFE/RL) -- The Russian newspaper "Novaya gazeta" has published an unfinished article that the journalist Anna Politkovskaya was working on when she was killed.

The article describes the alleged torture of two unidentified men at the hands of Kremlin-backed Chechen security forces. It is accompanied by graphic video stills shot during the torture session. One photograph shows a man lying prone on the ground in a pool of blood.

Politkovskaya, who wrote frequently about human rights abuses in Chechnya, told RFE/RL's Russian Service two days before her death that she was working on an article about two men tortured to death by forces loyal to Chechnya's pro-Moscow Prime Minister Ramzan Kadyrov.

Politkovskaya was shot dead October 7 in her Moscow apartment block, in what has been described as a contract-style killing.

Colleagues believe Politkovskaya's murder was connected to her work.

RFE/RL has been declared an "undesirable organization" by the Russian government.
