Environmental Official In Shell Case Criticized


The pipeline being built as part of the Sakhalin-2 project runs through the Zubrovy nature reserve (ITAR-TASS) December 14, 2006 -- The head of Russia's environmental watchdog agency has called for an official review of his deputy who led a high-profile environmental probe into a Shell-led natural gas project.


Sergei Sai, the head of the Rosprirodnadzor agency, cited "inefficiencies" in the work of Oleg Mitvol.


Mitvol has threatened to sue Shell, the operator of the Sakhalin-2 project, for billions of dollars in environmental damage.
