Police In Tatarstan Crack Down On Reporters, Passersby Amid Opposition Protests
Detentions accompanied an anti-government demonstration in Kazan, the capital of Russia's Republic of Tatarstan, on January 31. The police violently pushed reporters away to stop them from filming what was happening around police vans. Large groups of passersby were stopped in the streets, checked, and led away on the apparent suspicion that they might be part of the protests.
