ISLAMABAD -- Pakistani officials say two army officers and a senior police official have been killed in an attack in the country's northernmost province of Gilgit-Baltistan.
Local officials told RFE/RL's Mashaal Radio that gunmen ambushed a vehicle carrying an army colonel and a captain as well as a local police superintendent in the Chilas district of Gilgit-Baltistan.
Ajmal Bhatti, the deputy commissioner of Chilas district, told Radio Mashaal that the three officials were on their way back from a security meeting at Bhatti's house late on August 5.
Bhatti said that during the attack early on August 6, the vehicle carrying the three officials fell into a gorge.
A spokesman for Jandullah, a Pakistani militant group, told RFE/RL's Radio Mashaal that the attack was a response to the killing of senior Pakistani Taliban commander Wali Rehman. Rehman was killed in a drone strike in Waziristan in May.
