Russia's Federal Migration Service says there are more than 9,000 Georgian citizens currently on Russian territory illegally.
Service chief Konstantin Romodanovsky told journalists the Georgians came to Russia legally but records show they have overstayed the 90-day maximum period.
"We will find these people," Romodanovsky said, adding that once found they would be sent back to Georgia.
Romodanovsky spoke the same day the European Court of Human Rights heard the complaint of four ethnic Georgians who were deported from Russia in 2006 and claim they were expelled in a tit-for-tat move after Georgia detained four Russian officers on espionage charges.
