The May 9 statement from the ministry referred to a "rapprochement" reached between the United States and Russia earlier this week when Secretary of State John Kerry met with Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov in Moscow.
The two top diplomats announced their countries would arrange a conference on ending Syria’s two-year civil war.
Syria’s Foreign Ministry hailed "the firm Russian stance which is based on the UN principles of noninterference in internal affairs or the threat to use force against the safety of any state."
Kerry and Lavrov met on May 7 and said they would try to organize a conference on Syria before the end of this month.
